Revolution is generally understood as a coercive uprising meant to overthrow a current government or social order to make important change or establish a new system. The word revolution also refers to a full rotation, evoking the notion of an unbreakable pattern. Evolution, however, refers to gradual development that indicates growth and advancement. Together, these words underscore the idea that through finding courage, we may break free from our existing situation and progress towards elevated states of being and doing.
Artists have always been constant gardeners, cultivating alternate paths. The works in this exhibition demonstrate how artists continue to plant the seeds of r/evolution. They do this by opening up our perceptions, confronting history, imagining the future, contemplating nature, and the cosmos, as well as adopting strategies and tactics for justice and survival.
Through a range of approaches and genres, from digital animation to live action, and video game to documentary, the works in R/EVOLUTION invite us to reflect and connect, while offering us hope that we can move beyond our current condition.
